To upgrade from SAP CRM 4.0 or 5.0, you can use the standard tools only for some components, for example, the CRM Application Server. 

 

For most of the components, including the WebClient UI, an upgrade is not possible; they must be migrated.

Basically, if you are simply upgrading a software to a newer version that's called upgrade.

WEB UI-For most of the business transactions you need to apply SAP Note 1037748 that describes how to display fields in the CRM WebClient UI that have been enhanced in the Easy Enhancement Workbench (EEW).

 

UNICODE-f you want to perform a Unicode conversion, you have to do it before or after the upgrade. The Unicode conversion is independent from the CRM Server upgrade.

 

ECC-The latest release is SAP ERP Core Component (ECC) 6.0 (part of SAP ERP 6.0). You can also integrate previous releases of SAP R/3, R/3 Enterprise or ECC, depending on the scenarios you use. SAP ECC 6.0 contains all the interfaces to be connected to a SAP CRM system, that is, no R/3 Plug-In is required. Recommendation

 

A higher memory threshold is recommended if you run business scenarios that need more memory space. For standard business scenarios, a memory threshold of 70 MB is recommended.
